Human vs machine translation

Machine translation means that a text is translated using computer software  without human assistance. Given the technological progress that has taken place, it is almost impossible to ignore machine translation; however, machine translation has not yet reached the same standard as translation by a native speaker.

Machine translation is fast, easy and inexpensive. Yet the result is often unreliable or incoherent, as it produces a word-for-word translation which does not take account of the cultural context, and abbreviations and figures of speech are translated literally. Therefore machine translation still has to be checked and corrected by a native speaker translator.

Machine translation can prove to be practical for short texts that are needed for personal use, but if the texts are intended for publication an incorrect translation can damage a company’s reputation.

Data protection is also an important subject. With machine translations it is not always possible to guarantee the secrecy of the data.
